The Real Earth

On May 29, 1990 Donella Meadows wrote the State of the Village report to highlight some very interesting statistics of the world.

The idea of reducing the world’s population to a community of only 100 people is very useful and important. It makes us easily understand the differences in the world.

The Real World

In 2001 the report was made into a website that has since been seen by over 2 million people around the globe. The interesting point about the production is in the way it is presented. The word Powerpoint brings to mind unreadibly small text and bullet points, but The State of the Village uses strong and powerful imagery coupled with clearly stated numbers.

Go and have a look now at the new State of the Village slideshow.

The influence this has is pretty obvious. You don’t need to be the professional photographer yourself - there are freely available photos all over the internet that you can use. Can you open up Powerpoint the same way again after seeing something like this?

Humorous sidenote: isn't it funny how university lecturers will mark you down for boring presentations, when you read direct from the slides etc.. then their lectures are mainly just them reading, from the slides. I guess they already have the bit of paper so it must be ok eh?
